Interview with Ziel Karapotó in Lisbon

We’re thrilled to share this powerful interview with the Indigenous artist, curator, and filmmaker who represented Brazil at the Venice Biennale in 2024.

During an extraordinary week of Indigenous-centered programming, audiences in Lisbon had the (unfortunately) rare opportunity to engage directly with Indigenous art, cinema, and perspectives. Ziel participated in the groundbreaking “Reflorestar o Património” workshop at the National Museum of Natural History and Science, the Piracema Nu Bai film festival showcasing Indigenous, Black, and peripheral cinema, and the “Toré” exhibition at Galeria Verso alongside fellow Indigenous artist Olinda Tupinambá.

The workshop and film festival, organized by the EDGES Project, along with the “Toré” exhibition curated by Jamile Pinheiro and Filipe Campello, represent exactly the kind of initiatives that can build and strengthen alliances between Indigenous Peoples and audiences in Portugal.
